Based on archival research and an architectural survey, his research sheds new light on the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque transformations of the basilica, and the later restorations of the complex. The Templum Pacis (Temple of Peace) was built by the Flavian emperor Vespasian in 75 C.E. near the Roman Forum. It commemorated both the end of the Jewish war and the civil strife that had followed the death of Nero in 68 C.E. The heifer served other political purposes as well. Vespasian had constructed the Templum Pacis on the site of Nero’s razed Domus Aurea, which had been built on illegally confiscated public land. Along with the Cow, he displayed equally famous sculptures from Nero’s vast personal collection, many of which had been acquired by coersion or theft.
